A Guidebook On Domain Name

By: Simon Krandock

A domain name is the text name equivalent to the numeric IP address of a PC on the Internet. A domain name must be exclusive. Internet users get into your website with the help of a domain name. Thus, domain name is very important for a business.

Most people wonder whether they really need domain name or not. Well, for their business to be successful, they do need a domain name. Business is about building up credibility. Having a domain name is the first step towards that. Having a domain name like www. yourcompanyname.com makes your customers feel comfortable while doing business with you. There are many search engines that give importance to the home page of a particular domain.

Although domain name is not the only factor responsible for the success or failure of a business, it is certainly an important one. Therefore, to ensure your success you must choose a proper registered web address from the many options available like .net, .org, .biz and others. Most people find .com to be the most credible. That is why it is considered a popular extension that lends credibility to your business. You can choose any domain name as you have the freedom to use only alphabets, numbers, and dashes also. Only spaces and special symbols are not allowed. Domain names are not even case sensitive.

The name should be short and simple -- not more than 14-16 characters. A catchy name catches attention, so make it creative and exclusive, and never long and confusing. It should be easy to remember. Also, add a couple of keywords in your domain name to help search engines rank them. It’s important that the register domain name reflects the business you are in.

If you can’t think of a good domain name you can go the Internet to look for domain names that were once used but have expired. You will get lots of ideas to choose from. Just make sure the domain name you choose is not in use otherwise you can get into copyright infringement issues with the original owner.

Also, do not register your domain name with your web host in order to avoid having to move your domain if and when you decide to change your host. Keep the two separate otherwise it is quite a hassle.

You can even go in for more than one domain name. You can register your company’s name in full as well as in short. There are people who register wrongly spelt names of their websites. This way, you can be sure you have them all and no one else can tread in your domain.

You must ask around and take a vote for the best name. Do not decide on your own. There is a storehouse of ideas around you. Take advantage of that. Ask your friends, relatives, colleagues, employees and others for ideas.

Also take the price factor into consideration. Since there is much competition the prices have come down quite a bit. You can make a decent bargain if you spend some time and shop around.
