Alaska's Most Unique College; Is it for you?

By: Daniel Z. Kane

If you want to go to college close to home, if your goal is to be a Fortune 500 CEO, or if your idea of a great day outdoors is sitting in a college football stadium, reading further will probably be a big waste of your time.

But, if Alaska is your idea of a wonderful place to live, keep reading. You may be about to fall in love with a university.

Alaska Pacific University is a truly unique institution. APU's 200 acre campus includes a lake, and it's not unusual to see a moose, birds, or other animals on campus.

The University offers fairly traditional sounding business and liberal arts offerings, along with programs in environmental science, environmental policy and planning, and outdoor studies.

With what the University calls the "true wilderness" within a half hour from campus, where better to learn about the environment?

The University, by the way, does not focus on Alaska alone. During its January block, courses are offered in locales as far afield as Hawaii, Vietnam, and other regions.

APU is certainly not for everyone, but if the environment and the great outdoors are your passions, the University has a lot to offer you.
