Are Surgeries A Solution For Diabetes?

By: James Troy

It is said that for every 3 Americans born in the year 2000, 1 of them is likely to be contracted with diabetes during his lifetime. This means that by the year 2050, 29 million Americans will be diagnosed with diabetes, while another 10 million will have undiagnosed diabetes. This figure is estimated by The Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

For a very long time, diabetes has always affected millions of people worldwide. It's not just the person who have the disease, sometimes their relatives and friends are also contracted with this deadly diabetes disease. Diabetes works by affecting a person's insulin levels within his body. What then is insulin? Insulin is a hormone which allows the glucose in the blood to enter one's body cells to be used for energy. People suffering from diabetes are very likely to have problems with their hearts, kidneys, eyes, and feet.

Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of deaths in Canada, and it is also causing the country a huge $9 billion in losses every year. Furthermore, people with diabetes aged between 20 and 74 are very susceptible to blindness.

Although diabetes surgery may be an interesting option for diabetic patients, there aren't yet any long term data on its benefits and risks in large numbers of people.

Performing surgeries to cure diabetes is definitely a good solution, but you have to remember that the results are not 100% guaranteed. Type 2 diabetes sufferers, however, can't have surgeries done on them. On the other hand, type 1 diabetes sufferers are a little more fortunate - they can have diabetic surgeries.

Surgeons performing operations on obese people with diabetes had noticed in around 98% of cases the patients' diabetes condition spontaneously vanished a few weeks after surgery, which is too soon to be accounted for by their weight loss.

There are, however, still some doctors who feel that performing diabetic surgery should be used as the last resort, even though research has shown that it can really cure the disease.

Diabetes is becoming an increasingly global health threat. If diabetes is not treated it can cause long-term health problems because the high glucose levels in the blood will damage the blood vessels. Simply put, diabetes is a very lethal disease that impairs the body's ability to utilize food properly. The key to managing diabetes is education and knowledge.
