Consumers Beware: Do Your Research Online

By: Tom Takihi

Today’s society can be described as consumer-oriented. With the plethora of products and services available to anyone and everyone, each single person on this earth is considered a consumer. With the increasing awareness of consumers as to what they want and need, manufacturers and service providers are continually finding ways to improve and enhance what they have to offer. In order to stay at the top of the game, they continuously develop existing and new products and services to better serve their clientele.

Yet it cannot be denied that there are still many cases in which the consumer is taken advantage of. Despite the general increase in awareness of consumer rights, there are still those who are not well informed enough. It is vital, as a consumer, that you know what you want and what rights you have regarding your purchases. You should also expand your knowledge regarding the various products and services that you patronize or will patronize in the future. This information will serve as your weapon and ammunition to get the best there is for you and your family.

As society becomes more and more specialized, more and more services and products are becoming necessities. Just as an example, in the past, only business and corporations took on the services of an accountant. Today, even private individuals can hire an accountant to do their bookkeeping. Another relatively new service would be broadband Internet. Only several years ago, majority of Internet users rely on dial up services tied up with their telephone provider. Now, it is rare that you would meet someone who is still on dial up.

Even as people quickly adapt to the changes in terms of their purchases and consumption of goods, not everyone really knows what they are getting into. Take the Internet example. There have been too many cases of people being overcharged or wrongly charged for services that they did not know would be included in their package. Another problematic area would be taking out of loans. Interest rates – all termed differently – and terms and conditions more often than not confuse the borrower. The end of result of this is the borrower paying more than he wanted to in the first place.

To avoid such occurrences, you should not be a complacent consumer but instead be vigilant and pro-active. Before purchasing anything – be it a product or a service – make sure that you arm yourself with the proper information. Do your own research! That is what the Internet is for. Ask around for referrals regarding a potential product or service. Do not hesitate to pose questions to the seller. It is their job to answer such questions. Shop around for various companies that offer the same product or service that you are looking for then compare each offer. Only then should you decide which product or service is the best for you.

Consumers may not be right all the time but the responsibility of making the right purchase ultimately ends in our lap. Do not allow yourself to be a victim of unwise purchases.
