There may be millions of websites on the internet, but getting to the top of the search engines for two or three keywords isn't as difficult as you might think. Remember that even though lots of sites may include the keywords for which you wish to rank highly, the keywords in question do not necessarily represent the primary subject of those sites. For instance, if you are an automobile dealer with a website, assuming the site is well written, you really don't have to worry about competition from the thousands of websites on which someone writes a few sentences or a paragraph about his or her car. The fact is, not many of the webmasters who seek rankings for the same keywords you've chosen will be formidable competition either. Most don't know enough, and many others will think there job is complete after a few months of promotion. It's not. Are you willing to keep working on your site's search engine rankings? If so, you can keep moving up the search engine ladder. And, probably faster than you think. Just do these five thing. 1. Be sure you have good meta tags. There are lots of websites which will give you the basics of writing good meta tags and even create them for you; just do a search to find them. Remember that your top keyword or two should be in your title tag, and that you choose the keywords in your keyword tag carefully. Your description meta tag should give potential visitors a reason to want to come to your site. 2. Subscribe to a few website promotion newsletters. You'll learn a lot that will help you. My favorite newsletter is the LED Digest http://www.led-digest.com/content/view/52/77/. Don't forget to read the archives. 3. Add social bookmark icons to your website so your visitors can use them to help you promote it. One of the sites offering free icons is http://www.social-bookmark-script.com/generator.htm. 4. Create brief (250-350 word) articles related to the subject of your website or closely related subjects. Then, submit your articles to at least 15-20 article submission websites...more if possible. You can submit manually, but I recommend that you use a service or buy submission software allowing you to submit to well over 500 sites. It's worth the minimal investment required...here's why. With an author's box which includes a link to your site, like my author's box below, every webmaster who reprints your article will be giving you a link; a link that can help raise your rank in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. And, one article can generate hundreds of links for you. If you write a few slightly different versions of each article, you can get an even better search engine "bump" when they are published. 5. Devote as much time and energy as possible to a highly aggressive link building campaign. Start by submitting your site to the most widely used search engines. Then, submit your site to as many directories as possible, or hire a service to do it for you. Such services are very inexpensive, and most are very reliable. I've used three different ones and have been happy with each. Then, use my favorite (free) website tool http://www.webuildpages.com/cool-seo-tool/ to identify the top ranked websites and the sites that link to them. Then, ask the webmasters of those sites to link to you. Or, you can hire someone to conduct a linking campaign for you. In fact, the creator of the website tool mentioned above conducts link campaigns. Of course, there are other ways to promote your site...social media, press releases, etc. Try them out too. But, by following through on the five items above, and staying with it, you can move your website to a search engine position which will generate the traffic you need to enjoy success.
