How To Modify A CV Sample

By: Cynthia Penfold

You may already know that the best place to start the creating of your own CV is through the use of a CV sample. You may also already know there are numerous sources available for finding such a sample including the Internet and career centers. However, what you may not know is how to go about the process of modifying one of these samples to suit your own needs.
This article will provide some practical advice on how to do this. The most obvious place to start the process of modifying a CV sample is with the name and the contact information. It may sound obvious but you would be surprised with the number of people who forget this simple step. The existing name and contact information can be used as a starting point for the formatting but should be immediately changed to represent your own information.
After updating the contact information it is time to begin adapting the objective portion of the CV. The objective is usually the first item listed below the contact information and is used to explain the type of job you are seeking. This is also where you will make your first impression on a potential employer. The CV sample will be a good starting point because it illustrates how to write an objective but you should adapt it so it not only reflects your career goals but also makes you stand out. Typically your CV will then list your skills and previous work example. In this section you will want to be really careful to make changes that still follow the outline of the sample but correctly represent your own work experiences.
Through using a sample, you will see which types of skills and experiences you should highlight. Although you want to follow the example you also want to be cautious about not misrepresenting your experiences.
The last thing you should do when adapting a CV sample is to examine the remaining sections of the CV to make sure the information listed in them is correct.
