How to Become a Chiropractor

By: Barry Friedmann

In order to become a chiropractor, one needs to obtain a chiropractic degree in the philosophy of chiropractic. One has to be well-versed with chiropractic principles. Apart from theoretical knowledge, one also needs to have practical knowledge on how to treat patients, how to effectively understand their symptoms and what course of action should be undertaken for the various symptoms.

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine and is becoming popular around the world. There are unfortunately very limited numbers of chiropractic schools in the United States. Much of the time, those wishing to study as a chiropractor move to different countries to study towards their degree.

You need to have a chiropractor license in order to become a chiropractor. In the USA, these licenses are only valid in the state where you acquire your license. Usually, only those who have got at least two to four years of undergraduate education and to those that have done a 4 year college course in chiropractic are able to be granted a licence.

This course enables you to obtain your Doctor of Chiropractic degree. However, you will also need to attend state and national exams. Certificates for chiropractic are normally awarded in specific areas, like nutrition, neurology, internal disorders, industrial health, thermography, sports injuries, occupational health and diagnostic imaging. You will not be allowed to practice as a chiropractor without a chiropractic license.

A chiropractor has to deal closely with their patients. There is a lot of body contact during the process of treatment. If you want to become a chiropractor, you will need to be prepared for this. You will need to have zeal and lots of patience. The results of your treatment won't always be quick - you will have to convince the patient to follow certain dos and don'ts in order for your treatment to be effective.

You will need to have good communication skills to become a chiropractor. You should be able to effectively teach your patients what they need to do. Inter-personal skills are also extremely important, as it is important for your patient to believe in you and feel confident with your skills.

Two types of chiropractic practice are named straight and mixer. Straight is the oldest form of chiropractic principle - it is based on the teachings of B.J. Palmer and D.D. Palmer. Mixer chiropractor is a newer concept, wherein chiropractors mix the chiropractic principles with other forms of medical practices.

A chiropractor may work in the private sector or may work in a hospital. Those aspiring to become a chiropractor will be pleasantly surprised to know that chiropractor salaries are continuously increasing. At present, the average salary of a chiropractor in the United States is US$81,500 per annum. Salaries can range from USD45,000 to USD102,000 per annum. Chiropractor salaries depend on experience and qualifications.

If you desire to become a chiropractor, then I would recommend that you go for it - money shouldn't be a problem once you completed your education and you have obtained your license and set up your practice.
