How to Crush Your Car Insurance Rates

By: Adrian Kelly

Finding a good budget car insurance need not be a headache. Get smart with your money and get at least four online quotes. You should easily make a good saving.

Car insurance is a legal requirement. The minimum level of insurance cover required by law in the UK is Third Party Cover. The legal requirements for UK car insurance are listed under the laws known as the Road Traffic Act 1988.

As the insured person you will pay a premium, either monthly or annually, in exchange for the appropriate cover. What cover you decide to take should depend on your current circumstances and should be tailored to your needs.

The risk for your car insurance is assessed on three main things - your age, gender and experience.

They are the main factors that you cannot change and dictate what risk insurers are prepared to take by offering you a quotation for car insurance cover.

Some additional factors potential insurers will take into account (and will directly affect any car insurance quote) are -

* who will drive

* the type and make of car

* where the car is parked overnight

* the usage of it (private/business or both)

* the type of cover required

You must also give your car insurance company full details of all your current circumstances. This includes any previous offences or motoring convictions.

If you do not, you may be breaking the law and you may not be covered at all in the case of a claim brought against you.

What car is best for lower Car Insurance Cover?

First of all, car insurance companies use various key factors in calculating your motor insurance premiums. Every UK car is given a car insurance Group rating ranging anywhere from a Group 1 right up to Groups 20+.

Checking the car insurance groups of cars before a potential purchase could save you a huge amount of money. The difference in quotes will be considerable.

Most small engine city cars fall into low car insurance groups. Generally this means cars that have an engine capacity of around 1.0 L.

The cheaper cars with reasonable repair costs, such as regular family cars, are usually cheaper to insure and run, than large or powerful cars. Large cars, along with more powerful ones, are generally more expensive to repair.

Older cars often attract discounts for comprehensive insurance premiums and third party cover.

As each new model is launched in the UK it is given an insurance group rating. This helps the car insurance companies to assess your quotation and they input this information to arrive at a premium decision.

In the Country or in the Big City?

Where you live can also have a big impact on the level of your car insurance premium. So your postcode makes a real difference.

The reason being that insurance claims are far more frequent in urban areas so motorists in cities usually pay more. In the country and rural areas, drivers generally pay less as accidents are statistically lower.

What if you do not want to buy a small car with a tiny Engine?

All you need to do is just spend a little extra time online getting at least four quotes. Three quotes from online price comparison sites and one from your current insurer.

When you have your three online quotes go back to your current policy provider and ask them to beat it. They usually do.

It sounds really easy and it is. You just look up a few comparison sites and I guarantee you will get a lower quote.

Unfortunately most people will not take the trouble to look online. I just do not understand why people throw money away like that do you?

Get smart with your money and spare an hour online to really crush those car insurance premiums.

You will save money!
