How to Take Care of Your Teak Outdoor Furniture

By: Serene Jones

Modern homes are made of two parts-the indoors and the outdoors. Patios and gardens are as much a part of every home as the kitchen and the living room. This means that outdoor spaces should receive as much attention too. One way to improve outdoor areas is to get great furniture. What kind of furniture is best for outdoor use?

Make a Choice

There are many different kinds of outdoor furniture. You can pick one made of plastic or metal. Wood however has always remained one of the most popular choices. This is because wood can provide a classic but flexible look that can match any kind of home theme. There are of course a great variety of wood materials that may be considered for outdoor furniture. Most experts however suggest teak outdoor furniture.

Teak outdoor furniture is ideal for outdoor use because it is considered the most durable kind of wood. This means that teak outdoor furniture can withstand all sorts of seasons, insects and other possible sources of external damage. You can therefore easily enjoy the great look of wood while being at ease with the hardiness of your furniture.

Teak is the Best Choice

Before you buy your teak outdoor furniture it is important to first understand the nature of teak. Teak is a type of coarse hardwood that contains considerable amounts of oil. It is this tree oil that allows it to resist dry or wet weather conditions and termite infestations. It also contains some silica which provides further protection against natural and artificial substances that may damage other types of wood. This is why teak outdoor furniture may be kept with only minimal maintenance and treatment.

Leave it Alone

Teak outdoor furniture is the best kind of furniture for people who appreciate the weathered look. Even with some form of treatment, teak outdoor furniture still does age through time. You will eventually end up with pieces of furniture that will have a dull color with obvious imperfections. You will realize though that it is precisely because of this weathering quality that makes teakwood furniture perfect for the outdoors. You shouldn't buy teak outdoor furniture if you want to keep your furniture with a perpetually polished look.

Teak Oil for Maintenance

Teak outdoor furniture does not need to be treated extensively or repeatedly. You may however occasionally apply more commercially sold teakwood oil for additional protection and to balance the old dull wood look. You can use a typical paint brush to apply the oil. Make sure though that your teak outdoor furniture is clean before oiling and buffing.

Store or Clean Your Furniture

If you are a finicky teak outdoor furniture owner, you can always clean stains and provide additional protection for your furniture. You can remove stains by brushing your furniture using a soft brush dipped in a mild cleaning agent mixed with water. You can also sand and apply oil on stained surfaces.

Minor stains on teak outdoor furniture may fade through time and exposure. Severe stains however can be remedied by using a soft bristle brush and mild cleaning soap. Sanding and oiling can also be resorted to for serious stains.
