Your success in the job market could depend heavily on how good your cover letter is. Statistics show the average American's jobhunt lasting up to or over nine months! This makes it more critical now than ever that you get your foot in the door before you get it slammed in your face. With the right cover letter, that goal can be a lot easier to reach. When employers are sifting through a ton of resumes, looking for just one person for the job, the cover letter is your primary means of attack. It's the first look they're going to get at you, and it's your first opportunity to look better than the rest of the applicants. Surviving this first test is absolutely essential to getting the job. The "cover letter round" will make or break your entire shot at the job you're wanting, because the resumes with the good cover letters will proceed onward to the next round, while the resumes with poor cover letters (or none at all!) will be dumped into the paper shredder. Now, I doubt you somehow found the time to attend college to get a four-year degree in Writing Cover Letters, so you may feel a little intimidated in a world where a great cover letter is almost mandatory. Lucky for you, you don't have to be a cover letter prodigy. All you need is to have a good teacher. There's no better teacher than looking at examples. Learning an important skill by talking to experts in the field and seeing what they've done has always been a good technique. Sadly, getting in touch with these sorts of people seems to only be easy in the movies, which can cause a few bumps in the road. Luckily, the "expert" you're going to be looking for in this field isn't a person, it's the cover letter itself! It just isn't necessary to go hunting for the person who's written successful cover letters...instead go hunting for the cover letters themselves! They're a lot easier to find, and frankly they can tell you more than any person ever could. It's an important skill, being able to analyze something and come up with how to best adapt the inherent principles to fit your needs. A lot of people get too lazy and fail at it by simply plagiarizing, which by no means do I suggest or condone...taking the time to really figure out what makes a great cover letter so great will not only allow you to make your own great cover letters, but it'll also build the analysis skill and make you even more valuable to potential employers! Never forget the real purpose of the cover letter...it needs to do two things above all else: tell why you're qualified, and set up an interview opportunity. While the first point is important, the biggest goal of the cover letter is always to increase your likelihood of getting an interview. If you can get the interview, it's up to you to get the job...but without a strong cover letter, you may not even make it to the interview stage.
