Interesting Facts and Tips about Batteries for Hearing Aids

Thinking of getting new batteries for hearing aids? These are some of the things that you should know:

1. The size of the battery you are about to buy should be identified first. 10, 13, 312 and 675 are the most common sizes of batteries for hearing aids. The size 5 battery, the smallest size yet, was introduced to be used on new hearing aids that are placed in the canal completely. A color coding scheme on the packaging and zinc tabs is used so that one can identify the battery sizes easier. These are the colors and their corresponding sizes:

a. Red - size 5 b. Yellow - size 10 c. Brown - size 312 d. Orange - size 13 e. Blue- size 675

Letters can also be found after battery sizes so that the factory reorder number of such will be determined. This means that 3A and R19ZA batteries are still size 13 batteries.

2. The type of hearing aid as well as its application will need different batteries, so you should meet with your hearing care professional so that they can give you advice on what battery to use.

3. Fully discharged batteries may be thrown into the regular thrash, but a person should make sure that children will not have access to this. Also, keep the batteries out of extreme heat and cold; maintain a room-temperature environment to maintain its life. The batteries for hearing aids should be kept loose in the pocket or it will charge, leak or rupture. This should be kept in its packaging or placed in a battery holder.

4. You should not remove the zinc tab on the battery unless you will be using it. A zinc battery utilizes the outside air as its main source of power, so its life will be lessened after it is opened. If you place the zinc tab back on the battery after removing it, there will be no effect on the battery's life.

5. To preserve the batteries for hearing aids, you should let it ventilate at night. Also, one has to carry extra batteries in case that your batteries run out or it is lost.

6. There are a lot of newer breakthroughs in the design and manufacture of batteries for hearing aids, since the newer hearing aids are becoming smaller and smaller. The newer batteries have more power, and occupy less space. For every need there is a suitable battery available. In the present, the most used battery is zinc air, because it only utilizes air from the outside to power it.

7. High power zinc batteries for hearing aids are specially designed to reduce longer life in high drain applications. This is especially useful if you have difficulty hearing in noisy places, or your battery life is short.
