Introducing The Baroon Dollar - The Sunshine Coast Hinterland's Local Currency

By: Roger Laganin

If you're planning on a holiday on Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast, there's something new you need to know about: a new local currency. The quaint Blackhall Range region has decided to create their own local currency for visitors to spend while staying in Sunshine Coast accommodation. The announcement has received a lot of attention and has been covered by media all over the world.

The local currency is called the Baroon Dollar and, like other local currencies, was developed to encourage economic development in the local area. However, this currency has something which makes it unique; it's named after the nearby Baroon Lake.

Of course it's not currency in the sense that you could take it to the bank, but the Baroon Dollar serves as a sort of local voucher system. The currency can be purchased at participating local businesses and spent by visitors as they stay in Sunshine Coast accommodation - the currency has also caught on with local residents, who use the Baroon Dollar to purchase goods and services from local merchants.

The developers behind the Baroon Dollar have done something which few if any other local economies have been able to do - create their own local economic stimulus package. It's no small feat in a time of global recession but this "act locally" approach has been a boon for the Sunshine Coast.

Local businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores and many others in three of the towns of the Sunshine Coast, have adopted the Baroon Dollar and the response has been overwhelming among businesses, visitors and residents alike thus far. Visitors spending their holidays in Sunshine Coast accommodation have taken to the local currency with enthusiasm, using the Baroon Dollar for purchases while visiting the region.

The local currency was developed in the interest of taking a proactive approach against the global recession; to building the economy of the Sunshine Coast and to demonstrate to other communities all over the world the economic benefits of creating their own local currencies. So far the program has worked largely as planned - the money exchanged for the Baroon Dollar has been staying in the local economy, benefiting local restaurateurs and farmers. The Blackhall Range's experiment in taking economic stimulus into their own hands has caught on with tourists staying in Sunshine Coast accommodation has paid off handsomely for the region; it's a program that the communities who have adopted this new local currency have every reason to be proud of.

It's the most effective type of networking local business owners could hope for, with all of the participating businesses referring their customers to the others. For visitors spending their stay in Sunshine Coast accommodation, the Baroon Dollar has sparked the interest in trying the excellent cuisine of the region - and the produce of local farmers. These visitors have found themselves sampling the fruits of Sunshine Coast farmer's labours not only at restaurants, but also at the Blackhall Range area's renowned farmers markets.
