Is An Online Degree Program in Your Future?

By: Chris Tilden

It's a fact that a degree from a quality higher education institution, be it online or off-line can radically increase one's earning power throughout the course of a life. The potential may be hard to believe: statistics indicate that a higher education degree can increase one's earning power by several hundred thousand dollars over the course of a lifetime. With this awareness, one can see why access to a quality online degree program can significantly alter the future.

It is clear that there is a correlation between earning power and education. Individuals who possess a high school diploma or GED can make, on average, twice as much as those who have not completed any education at the high school level. However, for those who possess a college degree, they will find themselves earning (on average) twice as much as their peers with only a high school diploma or GED. Obviously, a degree, be it an offline or online college degree can radically change the direction of one's life.

Getting an online college degree just makes good financial sense. The bottom line is simple: you will earn twice as much money over your lifetime with a degree as you will earn without one.

It is clear that there is value in obtaining a degree. And with today's access to the internet via home computers, the ease and simplicity of obtaining a degree from an online educational institution makes this a viable alternative for many.

In today's brave new world of online cyber-world classrooms, admission criteria are not an impediment for the potential student. Likewise, costs are greatly reduced for the student since online educational programs do not have to maintain the overhead that traditional programs must maintain. Also, students can pursue their online educational programs at their own pace.

Also, there are no requirements that mandate students to sign up for a certain number of credit hours per term.

In many respects, online educational programs can be very similar to their more traditional counterparts. The degrees and curriculum that are offered online and off-line can be comparable in many ways and certainly create the same type of future earning power for the student with degree in hand.

Federal financial aid is available at certain online college degree programs for students who qualify. Scholarships as well as student loans are also available in many cases.

However, here is the rub: Not all online colleges and universities are created equal.

Some are nothing but diploma mills and scams; the diplomas that they issue are probably worth less than the paper they are printed on. These bogus degrees will not open the doors that lead to better jobs and bigger opportunities.

"Educational programs" of this nature do a great disservice to the online communityand create undue fear for those who may be considering the option of an online degree program.

So how can one protect himself from such online fraud? Actually the answer is very simple. Quality education, be it off-line or online, has always been regulated by outside accrediting agencies which evaluate schools and their curriculum. In other words, a quality online degree program will hold accreditation from an accrediting body as a standard of quality.

In the real world, there are traditional colleges and universities that do not possess accreditation; just so in the online world, one will find that there are educational programs that may or may not possess accreditation. But it is a clear fact: the mark of a quality educational program, online or off, is determined by standards of accreditation

Clearly, a quality online college degree program can be distinguished by its accreditation just as a brick and mortar college or university can be distinguished by its accreditation. With college degree programs now available online, at a fraction of the cost of more traditional education, AND with the promise of much greater income potential for those who obtain such degrees, it is a wonder why anyone would let such a powerful opportunity slip away. A small investment for today can make a world of difference for tomorrow.
