Looking at the German Society

By: John Creech

History has a way of affecting how we perceive the world. Although Germans have taken the initial lead in World War II, you’ll no longer see the trace of this violent past in their society. They may be rigid and a little too stern but this is only because they take their roles seriously. They strive for perfection all the time and are proud members of their society.

Germans have high regard for order and privacy. Don’t take things personally when they warn you or advise you about your manners. For them, this is nothing more than a social responsibility. So don’t chew gum whenever in public or raise your feet on furnitures. On the other hand, while others do appreciate praises, compliments may embarass them sometimes. They are not brought up to be too self-absorbed but to be hardworking and thrifty in managing life. Germans are perfect gentlemen while ladies observe proper etiquette. Traditionally, men open doors for women and also lead the path so they can serve, respect, and protect them at all costs. You never have to worry about punctuality for Germans are always on time. But if you think they’re too uptight, wait ’til the next holiday celebration and you’ll see how much they love to party!

Talking about German celebration and party, Germans invented the Oktoberfest as a Munich Beer Festival. It all started in 1810 when a ceremonious wedding was celebrated with culinary spectacles and racing horses. After the festivity, the people seemed to be delighted more with an exquisite culinary piece, also known as beer. The festivity soon paved the way for an annual event, which gained popularity around the world. Although the actual drinking spree is known as the Oktoberfest, it happens during the month of September. What can I say but the festival is one hell of a beer party with roller coaster rides, amusements, circus performances, live bands, and parades! No wonder there seems to be a growing number of participants every year for 16 straight days of fun and excitement.

Furthermore, uptight German people are considered healthier than American people because of three things: drunkenness instead of endless smoking, fresh vegetables rather than pills, and more advanced mental diseases treatment. Many bustling German public places are openly smoke free, but usually display lively German drinking sessions. In spite of heavy beer drinking, Germans still manage to be healthy. They enthusiastically follow the customary three meals in a day instead of food supplements; they also consume vegetables rather than pills. Many anxious women, nowadays, complain about their excess fats that is why they work out. However, fitness centers are not ordinary part of this interesting German lifestyle because Germans prefer eating more than exercising. This is, perhaps, why Germans are happy and vibrant people. Aside from the continuous booming of this first-rate German economy, its people live a healthy lifestyle. No doubt Germany has never stop producing the best and most famous people across the globe.
