Manage Your Kitchen Drains Properly

By: Leroy Calstard

When you own your own home, you need to do everything you can to keep it in good order. Taking care of your sinks and drains is one of those things. From the bathroom to the kitchen there are certain things you need to do to make sure your drains stay clog free and that you don’t accidentally put the wrong things like craftsman tools down your drain when you are in a hurry. Knowing how to manage your drains can save you a lot of time and money before it gets clogged up and you have to hire a plumber.

Read on to learn about how to keep your drain clean and about what you should never put down your drain.

Food. Don’t put food down your kitchen drain unless you use a garbage disposal. Food will clog your drain up. This includes veggie and fruit peelings, pasta, rice, butter, and oil. These foods can all cause a plug to occur in the pipes and stop drainage. Butter and bread will really clog it up and it can stick to the sides of the pipes. This can cause real trouble for you before you know it.

Grease. If you use grease, make sure not to put it down your pipes. Even if it is hot or cold it doesn’t matter. Hot grease is no better than cold grease because it will still stick to the sides and then harden up eventually. Once it hits the cooler lines of your drainage pipes it will get hard right away. Always throw your used grease away after you cool it down in an air tight container in the fridge or out on the countertop. You should always throw it away in your garbage when it is properly cooled.

Detergents: Using a dish washing soap for dishes only is the only thing that should go down your pipes, anything else will clog it up. If you use a lot of it, things will be even worse. This is any kind of detergent for cars or anything else. If you have a dishwasher, make sure not to use that kind of detergent in your sink, this can cause clogs too. Although it seems like it would work since its for dishwashers, in actuality it will not break down in the same way that it does in a dish washer. This also goes for clothing detergent that you use in a washing machine. It need to go in the machine to break down properly for drainage.

Pesticides. This is one of the last things you should ever put down your drain. When you mix these with water they will get gooey and clog up your drain. It can also cause leaks to occur if it breaks down the lines. Dispose of these products in a local program of sorts.
