Quit Nail Biting: 10 Tips For Growing Out Your Nails

By: Sherry Merrill

You made the decision to stop nail biting. As your nails grow out, you want to keep them healthy and good-looking. To get you started here are 10 tips to grow your nails out into beautiful nails.

1. Don't use your nail as a screwdriver. As your nails get stronger and longer, you will be tempted to use your nails to pick and pry things open.

Using your nail to get a price tag off an item seems quick and easy. Unfortunately it stresses your nail leading to broken nails. Use a knife or other tool to remove the tag.

2. Protect your hands and nails like models do. Wear rubber gloves for cleaning and washing dishes. Detergents, cleaning supplies, soap and dishwater dry out your nails, which causes breaks and peeling.

3. Avoid hangnails by moisturizing your cuticles. Keep a small container of cuticle oil or moisturizer by your bed. Every night before you go to sleep generously apply the oil or moisturizer to your cuticles.

4. Be prepared for rough edges on your nails as they grow out. Instead of biting the nail to smooth it out, use an emery board. Buy a large package of emery boards. Place one in your desk at work, in your pocket or purse, and in various places throughout your house. That way if a rough edge catches, you're prepared.

5. When removing nail polish, use an acetone free polish remover. Acetone polish removers work quickly but dry nails by removing moisture from the nail itself. Nails low in moisture break and crack frequently.

6. Don't want to use polish on your nails? Then buff your nails to shine and increase circulation to your nail beds. Lightly buff your nails every other day to help your nails grow and improve the appearance. Be gentle and lightly buff. Heavy buffing can act like a sander and cause ridges in your nails.

7. Protect yourself against nail fungal infections. When washing your hands dry your hands completely. Invest in your own set of manicure tools. Don't share or borrow manicure tools from others. If you are having a professional manicure make sure the tools are sterilized between uses. Better yet bring your own set of manicure tools to the salon.

8. Eating calcium rich foods like broccoli and milk help nails grow strong and healthy. It's just like you heard growing up: Healthy diets work. Talk to your healthcare provider about adding a supplement such as biotin to your diet to help grow nails.

9. Don't cut cuticles, moisturize them. When washing your hands, gently push back the cuticles with a towel. Before bed when you apply hand lotion or cuticle oil, gently massage the cuticles. With time excess cuticle tissue will disappear.

Having a professional manicure? Don't let the nail technician cut your cuticles. Cuticles are the first line of defense guarding against infection in your nail beds.

10. Take nail infections seriously as they can quickly spread from one finger to the next. Avoid picking or poking at a nail infection. Call your health care provider to see if you need antibiotics or other treatment to get rid of the infection.

Stopping nail biting can be a challenge. Make it easier by following the 10 steps to help your nails grow out strong and healthy. Soon you'll be showing off your perfect 10 beautiful nails!
