Relevance of hydroponics in the 21st century

By: Jason Uvios

Any invention and innovation has a direct connection with the age it is taking place. Hydroponics farming and gardening is no exception.

But a slight difference definitely lies because hydroponics didn’t appear all of a sudden out of the blue. It is very much a natural process to grow and sustain the plant kingdom but was beyond the knowledge of human endeavor till the twentieth century.

Rise of hydroponics

When the horticulturists and plant nutritionist were undergoing brainstorming sessions to search some alternative medium and mode to grow plants without a solid structure of soil, their attention went towards the ancient hanging garden of Babylon and Mexico. Further queries, experiments, surveys, researches and explorations gave birth to this scientific term “hydroponics” in the early twentieth century. And at present hydroponics is being considered as one of the most efficient ways to shape the indoor gardens.

Immediate benefits

How come hydroponics has become the call of the day? The extreme lucid control over the environment where the plants are grown has made this technique of cultivation gain immense popularity.

- You can pick up a small space and grow twice the quantity of plants than that of conventional way of farming.
- You don’t require any external source of water because the nutrient solution is sufficient to fulfill the need of water as well as necessary nutrients.
- Use of fertilizers can be avoided. Once again it is the same cause as mentioned above.
- Labor cost can be effectively discarded. Unlike traditional farming, hydroponics doesn’t require tremendous work force working at it.
- Again it also doesn’t require regular turning of soil, water supply etc. Only at regular intervals of time, the solution has to be changed and you will have to keep a track on the nutrient status and level present in the solution.
- And ripening of the fruits in this process is sure shot.

Present significance

The twenty first century looks at hydroponics as one of the most efficient and cost-effective means of cultivation. The space management and the conditions required can be easily made available and crops can be raised.

The only trouble area right now is large quantity production at a mass scale which has not yet been feasible. Progress in this field is being sought after and high quality production with greater food value is also another sector largely being researched. If these are attained, undoubtedly hydroponics will take over traditional farming in the days to come. It will become the agricultural epitome of the era.
