Seed germination: What advantage does hydroponics add?

By: Jason Uvios

It's water, water everywhere in hydroponics. Unlike Coleridge's famous line "…not a drop to drink" written after "water, water everywhere", in hydroponics every drop of water has its essence and important for the growth of the plant. Fine! But why is it advantageous over the solid soil medium where plants have been ever known to grow?

Probability of plant diseases

Seeds germinating in water and seeds germinating in soil have a difference. The major difference is the environmental variation. In the former the nutrients are derived from the water solution and in the latter every requirement is fulfilled by the soil. Since in the hydroponics medium the basic ingredient is water, the chances of it containing fungus and insects that can distort the growth of the plants are quite less.

Yes, water can get contaminated with bacterial growth but that has hardly any impact on the plants. But soil is the breeding ground for plant diseases. Fungal diseases are quite common in the soil and specifically rotten roots have a great chance to damage the entire yield. This probability is null and void in case of hydroponics gardening.

As the roots are always visible, you can easily get hold of the problem area if there is at all. But when it comes to the soil, everything stands and depends on your prediction as per the outcomes. The real causes are hidden deep within the earth.

Supply of oxygen and water

When soil is the medium to raise the plants, it is the natural source to provide the nutrients and water including oxygen to the plant roots and thereafter transferred to the shoots. To compensate the deficit, water from the external source and additional fertilizers are given to increase the ultimate yield.

What about the hydroponics system? You are already aware of it. Here everything is arranged artificially through the use of the natural resources. Water and nutrients like potassium, nitrogen and other minerals are mixed together to form the solution in which the plants are grown.

Water itself is a good source of oxygen but in hydroponics additional requirement of oxygen is fulfilled by the pump attached to the base or the container. As the pump is kept on, instant supply of oxygen can be gained by the water and hence received by the roots of the plants.

Water – a better medium

While germination of seeds, the medium water is more efficient than the soil as it can keep away diseases and lead to a quicker germinating process. The seeds turn into seedlings with hardly any spoil and then they grow under better conditions with better outcome. A day might come where the entire agriculture sector may adopt this process instead of sowing seeds in the soil.
