Small Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

By: Steve Gee

So you've got a small bathroom to remodel

Would you like to have a gleaming new bathroom but you're afraid that your tiny toilet just isn't big enough to turn into the ceramic heaven that you want?

Spend time designing and become one with your bathroom

Don't give up before you've started. Begin by making an accurate drawing of your bathroom on square graph paper. Take some time over this because it's important that you capture every detail. It's also a fun exercise to do.

When you've got an accurate drawing of your bathroom as it is now it's time to start dreaming about the bathroom that you would like to have.

Take a fresh sheet of graph paper and accurately draw just the outline of your bathroom. You can take the measurements from your first diagram. Now take another fresh piece of squared paper and draw on it the outlines of the fixtures that you want in your new bathroom. Make sure that you draw the shapes accurately to scale.

Cut out the shapes that you've drawn and try to arrange them on the outline of your bathroom. Because you only have a small bathroom you might need to be creative, especially if you want to get more into your new bathroom than you had in your old one.

I have a small bathroom recently transformed

When I dropped a jar into my bath and cracked it I decided that it would be a good time to redesign the room and add a shower cubicle at the same time. My bathroom is tiny so I wasn't sure that I would be able to realise this dream. I was dreading the job but it all worked out in the end. I got my new shower and the bathroom looks great.

Small bathroom problem solving ideas

The ideas listed below are intended to start you thinking of different and creative solutions to the problem of remodeling your small bathroom.

Raising the radiator can free space below

If you have a radiator taking up wall space consider putting it higher up. This could free up space for a sink or toilet.

Centralise the bathtub

If you are struggling with where to put the bathtub you might want to think about putting it in the middle of the room instead of against a wall. There isn't any magic to this but it might be an option you hadn't considered.

Design, design and redesign

I'm always amazed to find that I can spend hours trying out different arrangements and yet when I leave it alone for a while and come back to it later I can often spot options that I hadn't seen before. So keep playing with your paper cut-outs.

Space saving shower cubicles

You can save space by using a shower cubicle with curved sides in place of a square one. It will probably cost a little more but if space is a premium then it could be worth it.

Sliding door

A door that slides sideways flush with the wall or even into the wall itself can save a lot of space inside your bathroom.

Use wall mirrors

Mirrors can only give the impression of space but they are very effective at doing just that.

Install storage cupboards

Get all the accessories and cleaning stuff off the floor and into storage cupboards fitted to the walls.

Even the smallest of bathrooms has potential to be improved and in some cases, be turned into your ceramic dream palace. Don't forget to check out my small bathroom remodeling project in the link below.
