The Imminent Progress Of PC Games

We all remember the fabled days of pixel graphics and poorly animated cut-screens. Just 10 years ago we were living in an age where PC games were barely even supported by the Windows operating system- now you'll be hard pressed to find a Windows machine without some type of PC game on it.

Our progression to newer technologies is unveiling new types of PC games. These new forms of gaming include virtual reality, and even forms of controlling objects with mind control in-game. But before we can look to the future, we have to look at how PC games have evolved in question.

PC Games and Peripherals

Peripherals are simply any type of controller or means of input that can interact with an object on your PC. They are used to help simulate lifelike experiences, such as driving a car or flying an airplane. Some peripherals even simulate hunting and other shooting games, with highly advanced technology that simulates the "real thing."

Of all the PC peripherals available to gamers, the gamepad is the most renowned. It doesn't necessarily provide a realistic experience, but it does indeed help simplify the gaming experience. Some MMORPGs, for instance, require that many buttons and combinations of buttons be learned for many tasks- with a gamepad, this is simplified in fewer keys and "hot keys."

PC Games and Graphics

If you compare a PC game from the past to one of today, you'll notice a large difference. Whereas pixel graphics were popular in the past, 3D graphics are much more popular today. Where 2D graphics are still used, a new kind of graphics called 2.5D graphics are used that combine the two for a compromised result.

Today, almost everything is in 3D. This means that almost everything a PC gamer interacts with has some type of 3D model, object, or sprite associated with it- even if it is a 2D game! This allows for more realism in PC games, and thus, gives the PC gamer a better experience.

How PC Games Dominate Society

It seems that everywhere you look there is another MMORPG or RPG PC game that is taking over countries all over the world by storm. Some such as World of Warcraft are even pulling in over 5 million users each month in online game play.

Obviously, PC games have had a large impact on society. It will be interesting to see how things pan out in the future as PC games become ever more popular in due time.

PC Games of the Future

The foundations of virtual reality are already being developed. We already have the ability to use brain waves to move objects in PC games- the interesting part will be to see where the technology goes, and how far we take it.

Even more interesting is the fact that holographic technology is emerging. Soon we will be able to interact with beams of light that makeup "fake" objects. This technology is decades away from being perfected, but it is truly exciting to say the least. Perhaps in several more decades, PC games will be a completely real experience!
