The Savage Poker Player and Soothing Music

By: Jack Reider

Most people who play poker in casinos or online poker rooms are not professionals, they are amateurs who maybe played allot in college or maybe still play in a semi regular poker game. These are the people the casinos love the most. They think they are good and when they start loosing and have to start running to the cash machine, they start getting angry.

Playing poker anywhere when you are emotional can be a disaster. Most people when they star to lose will start playing more reckless in the hopes of getting a great hand and winning a big pot. What usually happens is they continue losing and getting angrier and placing even dumber bets.

A great way to stop this from happening is with music. Certain music can help to keep your emotional levels stable. This allows you to focus on the game and bet with your head and not with your hopes. I have seen many people bet big hoping that a pair of 4’s will win them the hand. I have also seen how that same person, I the same situation will make all the right moves when listening to the right music.

The first thing to remember when choosing the music to listen to is that you must enjoy it. There is no point of going any further with this experiment. The music you choose must be enjoyable to the person listening to it. The music should be mellow and relaxing, this will help keep you focused on the game and allow you to separate yourself from your emotions, and this is what makes a good poker player.

Some of the things you will notice change is your concentration on the game. You will find that things you did not pick up on before are obvious to you now, and you will see the other players tells stand out. You will also find that you have more money because you will stop betting big except when you actually have a good hand and not when you have a low pair. One of the best side effects of the music is it can improve your memory and that can help you by giving you a better id of what cards have been played and what cards may still be in play, this will allow you to once again make your bets based on an educated guess and not just guessing based on your hopes of winning big.

Also keep in mind that the casinos also know full well about the special affects of music on players, that is why the casinos will usually have horrible music playing from a sound system or from a bar band near the casino floor. This music is meant to be a distraction. Just as music you enjoy has a positive affect on your playing, bad music can have the opposite reaction from a player. It will throw off his concentration, the player will get very annoyed and make bad bets, and they will be so distracted they will not remember anything other then the fact that they are losing and need to do something to win their money back.
