By: Frederic Baker

Kidney stones cause some of the most horrendous pain known to man. Whether you are suffering now from kidney stones or searching for information on preventing a reoccurrence. There are different forms of treatment available.

High content oxalate foods (spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, collards, okra, chocolate, wheat bran, wheat germ, etc) should be avoided as much as possible to prevent the risk of generating kidney stones. Exercising and watching what you eat is the first step in preventing this ailment to grow,

The most common type of kidney stone is caused from calcium oxalate. Recent studies have shown foods high in calcium, including dairy products, may stop calcium stones from forming. Definitely, cut back, on drinking soda and iced tea which are both high in oxalate. Oxalate cannot be burned by our bodies and if not eliminated through urine, it binds to calcium and forms kidney stones.

Treatments for kidney stones are directly related to their dimensions. If the stones are minuscule, drinking large quantities of fluids such as water and fruit juices will hydrate the kidney and the stones will pass through the urinary tract and leave the body through urination. However, if you have not been used to high intakes of water, start gradually and consult your physician before radically increasing consumption of liquids. Drinking too much water weakens the salt in your blood and tissues - and can cause very severe damages.

Treating small kidney stones is normally done by the patient consuming 2-3 quarts of water or other liquid to pass the stone through the urinary tract. One in five cases of recurrent kidney stones is caused by chronic urinary tract infections. Make certain you seek immediate treatment as soon as any symptoms of infection occur. If, you suffer from any other metabolic disorders such as gout, be sure to continue taking your prescribed medications.

For the treatment of medium sized kidney stones, researchers have found that the bacterium, Oxalobacter formigenes, has shown a 70% reduction in the risk of recurrent kidney stones. The bacterium that naturally occurs in our intestinal tract is being tested and shows no known side effects. Your physician may prescribe a medicine used along with long-term antibiotics to keep any infection away that leads to kidney stones.

As the kidney stones get larger, medical action becomes mandatory. One of these procedures is sitting the patient in a tub of water and passing shock waves through it using a lithotripter. The stones are reduced to stone fragments that can then be expelled through urination.

Lastly, physicians resort to surgery using various procedures where small incisions are made and the surgeon crushes the stones with a specialized scope, or laser therapy. Hopefully, painful kidney stones will soon be a disease of the past. Scientists are busy studying the science of oxalate removal to help develop improved treatments to prevent and possibly reverse the formation of kidney stones in humans.
