Things You Need to Know to Land an ESL Job

By: Carrick Jones

How would you like to teach a classroom full of 6 year olds how to speak English in the Himalayas? If you would then teaching English as a Second Language or ESL might be for you. Exotic overseas ESL jobs can be yours if you follow these guidelines:
You can spend 4 weeks taking courses online or up to 9 weeks in a classroom in order to hold the proper credentials to teach ESL. It is no use even applying for jobs if you haven't first completed a course in either Teaching English to Foreign Learners (TEFL) or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). Accreditation for this course, as with any certification course is certainly recommended.
Courses are available online at several locations and range from $190 to $1500 depending on the program you choose. There are also classroom bases courses in select cities throughout the country and across the world. Classroom courses often include a 20 hour practicum for those who might feel they need a little practice before being turned loose in a classroom. Programs are typically 100 to 150 hours depending on the areas which you want to certify. Those areas include: General TEFL, teaching TEFL to Young Learners, and teaching business TEFL.
There is an abundance of job posting boards to assist you in finding job placement after you have your certification. Most of these posting sites offer resume support, tips for planning and career services as well as providing opportunities for employment.
The sky is the limit where employment opportunities in this field are concerned. Some sites are estimating that nearly 250 jobs are posted on their board weekly and that 15,000 plus job providers are regularly posting on their sites.
The business world represents the highest demand for these jobs followed closely by school systems in foreign countries. It might be wise to go ahead and invest in a dual certificate which includes the TEFL for business and TEFL for young learners. It can only increase your marketability and pay.
With the current job market climate it might be a good time to try your hand at teaching English in some exotic locale. An added bonus is the extra bit of prestige that having taught overseas will add to your resume.
