Why a Hostile Work Environment is Terrible For an Organization

By: Priscilla Demby

If you are a business owner running a company, you would want your employees to be satisfied. As they say, money does not motivate everyone. As a business owner, it is your sole responsibility to ensure that you provide a safe workplace for all your employees.

You want a workplace which ensures that the employees come to the office on their work days with a positive feeling.

Here are some ways that a Hostile Work environment ruins employee morale:

How an employee performs in the workplace is primarily based on two things - his mental and emotional make-up. An employee who finds harmony in the office will be more likely to work happily and will perform well, as can be seen and felt in a company's metrics.

A hostile work environment, on the other hand, means that the employee is disgruntled with the workplace and the culture involved. This displeasure and frustration will likely affect employee performance. It may cause the employee to perform badly or cause the employee to leave the organization.

How is the organization affected by a Hostile Work Environment?

The company has the responsibility of providing its employees with a workplace where they can feel safe and secure. Failing to do so increases the potential for poor performance and productivity. An example would be a sexual harassment case between a manager and a female employee. It is only natural that her performance will be negatively affected by her emotional and mental state as a result of the incident.

If such issues remain unchecked, the effects may be far-reaching. If an employee who was subjected to harassment returns to work, he or she may receive more aggravation. If this particular employee is a first-rate worker, the company will not just lose out from a temporary dip in performance. That employee may never return to his or her former productivity. Also, negative factors affect not just one employee but the rest of the staff as well.

How can a company prevent the presence of a Hostile Work Environment?

Since it is inferred that a Hostile Work Environment is extremely dangerous for an employee and an organization, steps must be taken to ensure that the workplace is conductive for the employee to do his or her work. This can be done by educating the employees of laws governing a safer workplace. The employees should also ideally be educated on internal policies of the company - particularly in the case of an employee found guilty of conducting inappropriate behavior towards his or her colleague.

The penalties for an employee who is guilty of inappropriate behavior towards a colleague are, in a wider legal sense, very serious. It can go from termination to something more serious - imprisonment. The company should therefore enjoin all employees to do their share in creating a safe and harassment-free environment for their colleagues.
