eCommerce Solutions - Are You Ready?

By: Raj Lonsane

The new age of business has created a unique environment; we have made the move from bricks to clicks. In other words, the consumer now has the choice to shop on-line rather than being solely dependent on a store front. This can be a mysterious and confusing path for the small business owner. The following information is designed to give small business owners a better understanding of e-commerce basics in order to determine if launching into e-commerce makes sense for their businesses.

Know what you want to get out of your site and understand how it will help to add value to your business

Everyone seemed to jump head first on to the web-site band wagon. Business owners would spend precious advertising dollars to have exciting web pages designed to attract customers, but they really didn't have a purpose for the site. The web, unlike TV or radio, was a very different business environment where people seemed to be spending money frivolously. How many business owners do you know, for example, would want to advertise on TV if they were totally unaware of the results they would receive from doing so? Your first step, then, is to determine if you have a purpose or a need before you consider developing a website.

Determining your need for a website

How do you know if you have the need for a web-site? There are three main areas in which business is done on the web. Consider what type adequately describes your business and then determine if the web is a suitable place for marketing your business.
The first area is business to business. This means that you do transactions from your store to another store or a variety of other stores. It also means that you have the ability to better service clients without having to send a representative or go out and place reorders yourself. If your business falls into this category, then having a website may make sense for you. Your customer will be able to place reorders on-line, which is more convenient for them, and makes what you offer a value added service. You may also be able to add value if you can give companies you work with more access to doing updates on their accounts with you via your site.
The second type of business that takes place on the web is business to consumer. In this instance, business owners are looking to find consumers to purchase products via the internet. It can be difficult for the small business owner to get new customers via the web as the internet has become an expensive place to get exposure. If you are looking to use the web so that a potential customer could find you on a search engine, you could spend a lot of money to get good placement. Before making a determination to invest in a website, you should do a cost benefit analysis and make sure that you will still be able to make a profit using this advertising medium.

A website like E-bay would be an example of a consumer to consumer transaction. E-bay is a server that gives consumers the access to trade with other consumers and the ability to buy items. In terms of the needs of small business owners, this is probably the least likely scenario, thus not much detail will be provided on the topic.

Website: Yes or No?

To conclude, benefits of having a website can include cost savings, more access to different markets and improved customer service-all of which can greatly enhance any existing business. Before making the final decision to invest in a website, take a closer look at your business and decide which option is best for you. If in the end you decide that a website will be beneficial for your business, think of some creative ways to make it work for you!
